Description of Services:
Functions as the governing office for the community; oversees all community programs, services and facilities
Activities and services for community members also include but are not limited to the following:
Activities and services for community members also include but are not limited to the following:
- Child and Family Services worker on-reserve provided through Tikinagan Child and Family Services in Sioux Lookout
- Hospital services available at Meno Ya Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout and in Red Lake
- Ontario First Nation Policing arrangements through Nishnawbe-Aski Police Services, Northwest Region; local ph: 807-774-4471; fax: 807-774-4143
- Offers community businesses including a Northern Store, 4 smaller convenience stores, a few gas stations, the Sandy Lake Motel and a few other motels, Sandy Lake Seaplane Base and a few small privately-run businesses
- Provides an elementary school and a high school as well as an adult learning centre for distance education
- Offers 6 churches of various denominations
- Operates a Canada Post postal service
- Served by a small airport maintained and serviced by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario and served by Wasaya Airways with daily direct flights to Winnipeg, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout
- Provides air ambulance services as needed
- Offers a local radio station which is the lifeline of the community and television station
- Participates in the Junior Canadian Rangers Program for youth (12-18 years) which teaches various skills including but not limited to first aid, using rifles safely, hunting and fishing, Native customs and traditions, healthy living, staying in school and drug and alcohol abuse awareness
- Administers education services and schools through Sandy Lake Board of Education including Gabbius Goodman Memorial Adult Learning Centre, Thomas Fiddler Memorial Elementary School and Thomas Fiddler Memorial High School
- Offers children's programs at the Sandy Lake Early Childhood Development Centre including the Nishtum Head Start Program
- Offers health care and health programs under Sandy Lake Health Authority and the Nursing Station, newly renovated in 2016
- Provides the Sandy Lake Volunteer Fire Department
