First Nations communities already involved with Dilico Child Welfare services by having stated that Dilico is to care for the child in question on its behalf

Description of Services:

Customary Care (Mikinaak Model)
  • Refers to the traditional practice of placing/raising a child outside the home but within the First Nation community
  • All members of the family, extended family, relatives and community are involved with planning for the child but Dilico maintains the responsibility to care for the child
Kinship Service
  • Provides services for children who cannot be cared for in their home but are not in the care of Dilico
  • Refers to the full-time care and nurturing of a child by a relative, extended family member, a member of the child's community or another adult with whom the child has a significant relationship
  • The Kinship Service caregiver works collaboratively with Dilico staff to develop and carry out plans of service for the child
