Application

  • Intake assessment required

  • Referrals can be from police, defense lawyers, crown attorneys, probation officers, case managers, native court workers, correctional staff, developmental service workers, mental health counselor or family members (no self referrals)

Eligibility - Population(s) Served

  • Individuals 16 years of age and older with a mental illness, acquired brain injury, developmental challenge and/or concurrent disorder who are involved with the criminal justice system

  • Client must voluntarily agree to services and

  • The possibility of mental illness and cognitive impairment must be established, and

  • The offence is not too serious (Class One)

Description of Services:

Provides assistance in accessing health services to individuals with a mental illness, acquired brain injury, developmental challenge, and/or concurrent disorder who are involved with the criminal justice system
  • Focuses on providing resources and support to prevent repeated offences
  • Provides a website list of accepted offences to qualify for program
Court support services are offered based on client need and include:
  • Accessing and retaining legal representation
  • Assistance with bail release
  • Case management services
  • Information and referrals for community support services, housing, psychiatric and income supports
  • Recommendations to the court at time of sentencing on behalf of individual
  • Screening for eligibility to the Kenora Mental Health Court
NOTE: Serious offenders are not eligible for the program but a court diversion worker will provide support
