Description of Services:

Functions as the governing office for the community; oversees all community programs, services and facilities
Activities and services for community members also include but are not limited to the following:
  • Child and Family Services worker on-reserve provided by Tikinagan Child & Family Services, head office in Sioux Lookout; Wapekeka served through Fort Severn Office
  • Hospital services available at Meno Ya Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout
  • Ontario First Nation Policing arrangements through Big Trout Lake (KI) Police services, administered by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
  • Provides a few small private businesses, Wapekeka Community Store and the Bear's Den Hotel
  • Offers a Youth Centre and a Senior's Complex
  • Holds community events and meetings at the Wapekeka Memorial Hall including the annual Survivors of Suicide Conference
  • Operates a Canada Post postal station on part-time basis; mail delivery by Wasaya Airways once per week
  • Provides worship services through St Paul's Anglican Church, the Parish Hall (where most seniors attend), the Full Gospel Youth Ministry Church and Wapekeka Assembly Church
  • Offers a local radio station and cable television
  • Provides provincial court services in the community at the Band Office on an occasional basis
  • Serviced by scheduled and charter flights through the gravel runway Angling Lake/Wapekeka Airport located 2.8 km W of community; maintained and serviced by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario
  • Provides an Emergency First Response Team
  • Provides health care at the Nursing Station (Judas & Emily Winter Memorial Clinic)
  • Coordinates some health programs through Wapekeka Health Authority
  • Administers education services and the Reverend Eleazar Winter Memorial School, currently operating in community buildings pending construction of new school, through the Wapekeka Education Authority
  • In Aug 1981 the Angling Lake Band officially changed its name to Wapekeka First Nation
  • Wapekeka is a dry community and ALL arriving passengers at airport and via winter road undergo a luggage check for alcohol and/or illegal substances
